On August 16, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) released the results of the 2018 application project review. Up to now, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has received 126 projects in 2018, with total funding of 56.31 million yuan, with an average funding rate of 33.33%.

The total number of project grants increased by 35% compared to last year, with a total increase in funding of 12.75 million yuan. More departments than ever received funding under the NSFC project review, with 17 departments in the school receiving funds.

As an important part of the national innovation system, the National Natural Science Foundation is an important source of funding for scientific research in universities and a major indicator of the scientific strength and academic level of universities. The funding rate for projects is an important evaluation indicator for the scientific research level of the faculty in the higher education sector.

The average funding rate of SUSTech’s fund projects in recent years is over 30%, and this year, SUSTech has seen an increase to 33.33%. In 2017, SUSTech’s general program project funding rate was up to 50%, and a considerable number of our faculty members could not apply the projects. However, SUSTech’s funding rate for 2018 remained at 37%, higher than the national average funding rate of 16.54%. Our research teams ‘competitiveness in the field of basic research at home and abroad has been shown.

In the declaration of the 2018 NSFC grants, SUSTech provides full support for applying the talents, key projects and organized three-level demonstrations for important projects at the university level, department level, and research group level.

SUSTech’s Office of Research invited well-known experts from related fields to provide specific amendments and suggestions to the application and provide service support.

This year, Professor Tan Bin was approved by the Distinguished Young Scientist Fund Project, and Associate Professor Jiang Wei got the Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars Project. Professor Zheng Chunmiao was approved for the Key International Cooperation Project. Professor Liu Chongxuan and Professor Zheng Yan were approved for key projects. Professor Wang Lianping and Professor Zhang Chuanlun were awarded for major research projects that are also key supported projects. A number of our faculty members have taken the defense and declaration in the subsequent joint funds and major projects.

The increase in the number of grants for the Natural Science Foundation of SUSTech has shown that Southern University of Science and Technology has a group of outstanding research teams and the ability to cultivate outstanding scientific and technological talents.
