SUSTech‘s 2017 NSFC Funding Success Rate Hits an All-time High of 38.24%, Ranks No.1 in GD

On August 17, 2017, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, NSFC, issued a 2017 funding project approval notice, stating that the Southern University of Science and Technology, SUSTech, received a total of 91 projects, with total funding reaching 43.6 million yuan. The number of funded projects and funds have reached a record high.

The average funding success rate reached 38.24%, higher than the national average, which is 17.15%, and ranking first in Guangdong Province. The success rate of General Project(GP) is as high as 50%.The number of projects increased by 40 compared to the same period last year, and total funding increased by nearly 50%.

At present, SUSTech has successfully obtained funds from nine divisions of the NSFC. In 2017, the number of projects supported from five different categories, includes 43 from the General Project(GP), 42  from the Young Scholars Fund, 2 State Key Programs, 1 Excellent Young Scholars Program and 3 Joint-Research Programs.

A "new breakthrough" in science funding

According to the notice, SUSTech achieved a "new breakthrough" in applying for funds from the NCFC in 2017. Over 11 SUSTech faculty members were invited to participate in the NSFC’s various types of project review meeting; GP project funding increased significantly in 2017 to receive a total number of 43, an increase of 25 compared to last year, accounting for 47.3% of the total projects. Over 15 departments and schools got the funding this time, including Biology (17), Chemistry(16), Materials Science and Engineering(9), School of Environmental Science and Engineering(8), Physics (6), Electrical and Electronic Engineering(6), Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering(3), Mechanical and Energy Engineering(3), Ocean Science and Engineering(3), Biomedical Engineering (3), Materials Characterization and Preparation Center(3), Computer Science and Engineering(2), Earth and Space Sciences (2).

As an important part of the national innovation system, the National Natural Science Foundation of China is an important source of funding for scientific research in colleges and universities. It is an important indicator of the scientific research strength and academic level of colleges and universities.

Aiming at increasing our faculty members’ funding competitiveness through personal coaching and training, SUSTech continued to strengthen the policy guidance, and the process of declaration and mobilization, faculty demonstration, audit submission, correspondence and meeting review were carried out.

SUSTech’s excellent results in 2017 are a clear indicator of the university's ambition to become a leader in the areas of scientific research and funding and it will continue to effectively promote its competitive edge in research and innovation in future.
