At a time when far-reaching public and private transformations in the Chinese health care system are reshaping health care delivery, biomedical research and medical education, this collaboration creates the opportunity for Johns Hopkins and SUSTech executives, faculty and administrators to collaborate on the conceptual and operational development of a new educational model that seeks to prepare future Chinese leaders in medicine. Johns Hopkins is a longtime international leader in advancing medical education, most recently developing its innovative Genes to Society medical curriculum, which emphasizes a new model of health care combining individualized or precision medicine with public health principles. Under the terms of the collaborative arrangement, Johns Hopkins experts will provide comprehensive support and advice to the SUSTech-led Medical School Planning Committee in areas vital to the new medical school including curriculum and faculty development, admissions and educational administration policy, facilities and technology infrastructure, clinical clerkship and hospital affiliations.

According to the contract, leaders and professors of SUSTech and JHU would develop a close collaborative relationship and an overall planning committee will be found. The committee consists of key personnel from both sides and would be in charge of the main issues in the future. In the coming years, SUSTech would receive intensive support from JHU and JHM in curriculum design, talent introduction, academic exchanges, facility construction and administration.

This collaboration will promote knowledge transfer, faculty and academic exchanges between one of the world’s leading academic medical centers and the unique and innovative academic environment being developed at SUSTech in consultation and collaboration with local and national leaders.

Johns Hopkins University (JHU)

The Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876, was America’s first research university, the first in the Western Hemisphere based on the European research institution, with a mission both to teach and to advance human knowledge through discovery. Johns Hopkins was established on what was then a revolutionary idea, that universities must do more than teach the collected wisdom of the past. Founding President Daniel Coit Gilman argued that they must also advance human knowledge and apply that knowledge for the common good. Gilman's philosophy guides today's Johns Hopkins, which remains a world leader in education, research, and patient care, and where faculty and students are partners in learning and discovery. Together, they explore what makes us human -- culture and society, art and literature, science, health and medicine. Together, they study what drives the universe where we live. Together, they use their knowledge to make tomorrow better.
