2017 SUSTech International Advisory Council Meeting Successfully Concludes - “International Leading Think Tank” Gives Suggestions for SUSTech Development including medical school

On October 17, 2017, the SUSTech IAC meeting was successfully concluded with the IAC members providing valuable suggestions and advice on how to make SUSTech a world-class university after in-depth discussion.

On the morning of October 17, the IAC members firstly held a closed-door meeting to discuss and draft  a preliminary report. In the subsequent meeting, the IAC Chair, Henry T. Yang, who is also the Chancellor of the University of California, Santa Barbara, presented the report on behalf of the Council, to the Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipality Zimin Gao, who is also the vice chair of the SUSTech Board of Regents; President Shiyi Chen, University Council Chairperson Yurong Guo, other university leaders and the university members of the SUSTech Board of Regents.

Meeting Venue


The proposal of speeding up the establishment of a medical school with world-class standards was recognized by the IAC members. Eng Chye Tan, President Designate of the National University of Singapore, shared his experience of building an excellent medical school at NUS in collaboration with Duke University. He said that the future development of medical technology is inseparable from digital technology, and Shenzhen is particularly well-placed for this given that it is the center of digital innovation. He reiterated that a top medical school is essential for a city like Shenzhen and said that SUSTech’s medical school could be the future of health care. President of the University of Queensland Peter Høj then gave a short speech in which he underlined that the Shenzhen has a very strong technology industry, and that the future of science and technology should be combined with advanced medical technology, which is why it is so important for the SUSTech to have a medical school that can serve the city's growing and aging population.

On the topic of talent training and discipline development, President of Stony Brook University New York Samuel L. Stanley Jr. attached great importance to the interdisciplinary approach, saying that now successful international research universities particularly focus on cross-field areas, and that topics like computer science and medical research will be indispensable to a modern medical school.

President of SUSTech Shiyi Chen concluded the meeting with a final speech in which he once again expressed his sincere gratitude to the IAC members for coming from afar for this event. He said that during the meeting the Council put forward many valuable suggestions and shared advice on the future development of SUSTech.to implement these recommendations, SUSTech will consistently focus on quality and continue to cultivate outstanding talents for China and the world at large. He hoped that in the future, SUSTech will continue to cooperate deeply with advanced international universities to speed up the process of becoming a world-class university. 

Yurong Guo expressed the appreciation of the Guangdong Provincial Committee and Government, Shenzhen Municipal Committee and government, and the IAC members for their support to SUSTech. She noted that valuable suggestions proposed by them will have a significant impact on the future strategies of SUSTech. She hoped that the IAC members can remain attentive to the development of SUSTech and contribute their insights and suggestions on how to make it a world-class university. The 2017 SUSTech IAC meeting is bound to be a milestone event in the history of SUSTech.
